On the 7th of August the District Commissioner Mr C. Musonda was
the guest of honour at the official presentation of the new school uniforms.

On the 28th August, 29 pupils from grade 6 & 7 undertook a school educational
tour (the first one in Lufutuko's history). They visited ZAMTEL
(Zambia Telecom' Company) and were shown around with explanations provided by an engineer in the switching room and fault
detection department. The pupils then visited the Central Police Station. Officers from the Victim Support Unit gave
a talk. The pupils then visited the cells and the armoury. The final destination for the day was the King George Youth
Memorial College. After enjoying a packed lunch in the common room, the children had a tour of the college, which included
the conference hall, administration block, library and computer room.
A wonderful day out!

Four computers donated
last month were installed and used for the first time.
The Bana Besu kitchen, dining room, & storeroom all
had a "face lift", they all received a fresh coat of white wash.

Teacher interviews were held and three new teachers were appointed
to fill vacancies before the start of the first term of the year.
Block making for the new health supervisor
/ nurse office was delayed by the rain (2600 of an estimated 3000 blocks have been made).

|
|
Uniform making for the grade 1 pupils was commenced. A reading &
writing competition was held on the 16th. Four Lufutuko pupils participated. Lufutuko came 8th out of 12 schools.
|
|
|
There were heavy downpours
of rain during the month and some of our pupils were unsettled because their homes had collapsed. Nonetheless, attendance
numbers at Bana Besu Feeding Project and Lufutuko School did not go down. The rain also resulted in a crack in the kitchen
wall.
The size of the cobs in the maize field were smaller than other years. In spite of this, the field provides
some food security.

Trustees from Silverwood visited Kawama from the 2nd April with
a number of gifts from donors in the UK (calculators, parachute games, footballs, netballs and items of stationery). A number
of pressing needs were identified including the upgrade of the school latrines, school text books (4 classes
don't have any) and soaring food prices.
The school played netball & football against neighbouring
Salamano Community School before closing on 9th - end of term one.

|
Building work for the heath supervisor's new office started &
by the end of the month the concrete slab for the floor was almost finished.
Lufutuko School - the new classroom
block was painted before school reopened on the 10th of May. The front wall of the Bana Besu kitchen was repaired and a new
door & lock fitted funded by donations from the Kawama church.

Government Health Centre staff visited the school and HIV/AIDS education,
de-worming, and the administration of tetanus toxoid were given to grade 6&7 pupils.
Grade 7 pupils took part
in Zone JETS fair with Lufutuko coming second in Maths and fith in Science out of six schools. This resulted in an overall
fourth place. This is a good result considering that Lufutuko's preparations were rather last minute! Well done.
Painting of the dining room, kitchen & storeroom was completed - Bana Besu has had a facelift.
The
Health Supervisor's new office construction continues - now at window level

Our grade 1 teacher, Miss Josephine Chitula, received the "most
conscientious worker award" in our school from the Permanent Secretary for Central Provence on 5th October. Hearty congratulations.
The VIP toilets are finished (complete
with tiles, paint and grill gates).

Bridget &
Estella, two of our three cooks, sat their grade 8 exams. During their exams they came in early to do the cooking. We wish
them well.
Nurse Jessie Jalabani, our new project health supervisor, started work on 1 November. This was exciting
as it is almost a year since we last had a nurse. The nurses new office has been a hive of activity with 98 attendees in the
first month.
Following the completion of the VIP toilet block, the old girls toilets were demolished. These blocks
and left over blocks from the new offices were used to construct 47m of wall to prevent passers by from using our toilets
(as has been the habit of some).

The grade 7 (final year) results for the 2010 academic year were announced. All the pupils who sat
the exams have passed. Congratulations to the pupils and staff of Lufutuko.

Twelve local schools participated in a grade 3 & 5 reading
and writing competition on 14 Feb. Overall marks gave Lufutuko third place beaten by Jaysia Private School and Family
Future Community School. Congratulations to the pupils who participated.
All four classrooms were named after
the major rivers in Zambia; Zambesi, Kafue, Luangwa and Chambeshi. This will provide a focus for awarding marks in various
school competitions.

Our school was invited by The Ministry of Youth, Sport &
Child Development to broadcast their singing, poetry and memory verses on Maranatha Radio (a local radio station). The programme
was broadcast on 6 March.
Silverwood Trustees, Jean & John Shergold from the UK, visited in April. A
special service and assembly were held and presentations made.

The monopump (hand pump) on the well has been giving discoloured water.
On further investigation it was found that the well water was fine but rust in the pipes has been causing the discolouration.
Water has had to be drawn with a rope and bucket as a result. Thanks to a very generous donor funding has been secured to
replace the pipework for the monopump.
One of the grade 7 pupils, Ethel Mwape participated in
the Primary Maths Olympiad on the 3rd of June and came first in our group of schools. She was later chosen to represent the
zone at a district JETS fair on 10th June. She came second out of seven zones. Well done Ethel!

The cleanest classroom
competition continues with Kafue classroom winning in June (prize - an eraser each) and Chambeshi class in July. Some welcome free learning materials were received from the Zambian Ministry of Education (400 pencils, 400 pens,
900 erasers, 900 sharpeners & 200 rulers).

Sadly Lufutuko School lost three of its six teachers in July.
They resigned to take up posts at private schools in Kabwe. The leadership are actively seeking permanent replacements. At
this time contingency arrangements remain in place.
|
|
|
|
A hearty welcome to our three
new teachers (Mr Dennis Chikwanda, Mrs Veronica Mwansa & Miss Chilufya Musonda). The leadership have managed to recruit
the new teachers to replace the teachers that left in July. We hope they feel quickly at home. As
a result Lufutuko School is back to a full compliment of teaching staff.
