In
keeping with many similar communities in Africa, the effects of HIV, TB, Malaria and poverty have had a significant impact
on Kawama. It didn't make sense to "feed children only to have intestinal worms eat half the food". A
project health supervisor (nurse) was appointed in Nov 2006.
The project health supervisor provides a range of health educational and
promotional activities for the children of Bana Besu and Lufutuko (and their immediate families). This includes advice
on nutrition, hygiene, illness and sexual health. In addition to the work at Bana Besu & Lufutuko, the nurse visits families
in the community providing support and advocacy in accessing government health services.
She also supports the local church
in their HIV work.
