On the eastern outskirts of the
town of Kabwe lies the township of Kawama. This is a poor community with little access to amenities like piped water, electricty
or schooling. Three ladies from Kabwe became aware
of the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in the area in approximately 2000. They started a feeding scheme 'Bana
Besu' (Our Children) with food from their own kitchens and homes.
Bana Besu , the beginning.
The feeding project was extended
with the help of a UK charity (Silverwood Trust). A dining room and kitchen were built. Today Bana Besu feeds a nutritious
meal to 120 children 5 days a week.

Before long it became apparent that the children needed schooling. Volunteer
teachers started the work and Lufutuko school was born. The first structure was a wooden rudimentary structure. A two classroom
mud-brick and thatch school was then built. These classrooms were added to in 2006 with a sturdy fired-brick two classroom
school with offices. Lufutuko now has a roll of approximately 250 children from grade 1 to grade 7.
The Silverwood Trust is registered with the Charity Commission. It was started in 1985 by John and Jean Shergold
and supports a number of individuals, projects and churches in the UK and internationally (Bulgaria, India, Italy, Moldova,
Zambia).
